How to Cut a Mango

Whether you are using it in a recipe or eating it by itself, a mango is a very flavorful piece of fruit. However, because it has a large seed in its middle, a mango cannot simply be cut through its center. It’s not difficult, but cutting a mango differs slightly from cutting most other fruits.

Required Material

  • 1 Firm ripe mango

Required Tools

  • Cutting Board
  • knife

Instructions

  1. Select your mango. You should choose a mango that is not overly ripe.
  2. Lay the mango on a cutting board. One of its flat sides should be sitting on the cutting board.
  3. Cutting lengthwise, slice mango on its flat side, keeping your knife next to the seed.
  4. Turn over the mango and repeat Step Three.
  5. Take one of the mango halves and slice the pulp in a cross-hatch pattern. Cut down to the skin, but do not cut through it.
  6. Repeat Step Five on the other half of the mango.
  7. With your thumbs on the ends, pick up one of the mango halves.
  8. Put your fingers under the center of the piece of mango and press down with your thumbs while pushing up with your fingers. This will push out the chunks of mango and make them easier to slice.
  9. Slice off the chunks by slicing between the skin and the square chunks.
  10. Repeat Steps Seven through Nine on the other half of the mango.
  11. Slice off the extra pulp from around the seed.
  12. Cut away the skin from the extra pulp, and then dice it to match the rest of the mango chunks.
  13. Discard the skin and seed.
  14. Enjoy your freshly cut mango!

Tips

  • If you have a mango that is extremely ripe, instead of throwing it away, you can use it in one of the many recipes that requires pureed mango pulp.
