Romance is often reduced to a simple purchase of flowers, chocolate, and gifts. True romance is not about material items, it is a mindset which can be experienced any time of the day.

  1. Make eye contact. Making and sustaining eye contact with your significant other can propel a situation from ordinary to romantic. While listening to your significant other speak make sure to make eye contact. Before kissing or holding your significant other, make eye contact. So many emotions show through the eyes, eye contact is a key component to any romantic gesture.
  2. Be unexpected. By doing something you know your significant other likes to have done, but that you don’t generally do, you are displaying your love and being romantic. This unexpected action could range from picking flowers, cleaning the bathroom, doing the dishes, or cooking dinner.
  3. Be considerate. Having consideration for your significant other’s needs, wants and feelings is always romantic. It shows a level of care and caring that will make your significant other feel special.
  4. Pay attention to what your significant other says. Listening is a skill adults often lose- especially toward their significant other. By listening to what they say, you can pick up on what is important to them and this can influence actions you take throughout a day. By listening to your significant other, you may find out that he hates it when people talk while he watches a football game, or that she loves it when someone holds a door open for her. These verbal cues give you a road map to romance.
  5. Create special moments. Whether you’re driving in a car together, taking a walk or going grocery shopping, simple actions can make the moment romantic. By doing something unexpected like kissing your significant other, telling them you love them, or forcing them to pause and enjoy the moment, you are creating a memorable, romantic moment.
