How to Grow Tobacco
Growing tobacco is a very profitable activity. You can start this project in your garden or backyard and sell your output to certain stores. In addition, this task is also relatively easy. Below are the steps in growing tobacco.
Steps to Grow Tobacco
- Choose the best site to plant tobacco seeds. Select a location in your property that receives much sunlight. The soil in the area should be well drained. You also need to check the pH of the soil. A good pH level for planting and growing tobacco is 5.8.
- Purchase tobacco seeds. Plant nurseries are the best sources of tobacco seeds.
- Provide a propagator for them. This material gives the tobacco seeds the right temperature and humidity for them to grow properly. Generally, tobacco seeds need a temperature of around 70 to 80° Fahrenheit. You can use a plastic container with a lid as your propagator.
- Place the seeds in the propagator. The length of time for propagating the seeds depends on the instructions included in the seed packet. If such information is not included, ask the sales person at the plant nursery.
- Set the seeds on the soil. Provide a good distance between each seed so that the plants will not intersect with each other. Regarding the watering requirements, you need to provide at least 100 cm of annual rainfall. You also need to provide a small amount of fertilizer to the tobacco seedlings. Make sure the fertilizer you will use does not contain chlorine.
- Pick tobacco once the leaves are already ripe. The leaves of tobacco plants ripen from bottom to top.
