How to Use a Sand Blaster
Although not as common as other tools, a sand blaster is very useful equipment for do-it-yourself projects. Removing paint from concrete is just one of its many uses. Learning how to use a sand blaster is also easy, provided you perform the following steps carefully.
In addition to the sand blaster itself, you need the following things while operating this machine:
- dust mask
- safety goggles
- work gloves
- pieces of cloth
You can either rent a sand blaster or purchase your own. You should buy one if you frequently do projects requiring this tool. Before you start using it, make sure you are properly dressed with the protective gears.
Instructions
- To begin using the sand blaster, fill it with the material of your choice.
- Do this until the material reaches the fill line. Dry ice, ground corncobs, steel beads, and sand are examples of materials you can use. Make sure all of its valves are closed while filling the sand blaster.
- When you have filled the sand blaster, pull the ring closure up to seal the tank.
- Double check if the ring closure is in the “up” position.
- Turn on the air valve.
- Open all the valves except the nozzle valve.
- Slowly open the nozzle valve. Remember to keep a slow moving motion as you open the nozzle valve. A stream of material will come out from the nozzle. The material should be in a mist form as it comes out. If it does not, try to open the valve more slowly.
- Point the nozzle to the surface you wish to sand blast.
- Maintain a sweeping motion as you move the nozzle back and forth.
- Turn the sand blaster off when you are done.
- Clean the machine thoroughly before finally returning the sand blaster or storing it in its case.
