How to apply Stucco

Stucco can be very pleasing to the eye as well as it is very durable and weather-resistant if properly done. It can also be painted and has a very long life. It does require a solid backing for it to adhere properly and last a long time..

Required Materials

  • Water
  • Portland cement
  • Sand
  • Hydrated Line

Required Tools

  • Wheelbarrow
  • A Shovel
  • Metal Hoe
  • Hose with Water Supply
  • Trowel- a device for applying Stucco to the wall and help you create patterns.

Instructions

  1. The first thing you must do is prepare the surface for the application of stucco. Interior walls need to be clean and free of large cracks while exterior walls can be cleaned with pressurized water if needed. If you use any soap or cleaning agent do not apply stucco until it is thoroughly dry.
  2. Mixing the stucco will be your next step in the process. Grab your wheelbarrow and add the dry ingredients to it. Make sure you use a measuring device that way you can keep all parts equal.
  3. Add the water next, but take it slow as this process should not be rushed. While adding the water you’re looking for a thick paste consistency. Do not use too much water as this will make it tough to get the consistency that you need. Only mix enough material that you can readily use in a hour. By mixing more than that it can dry out on you and you will have to throw it out. Mix it periodically as well so it will not dry out either.
  4. Applying stucco to concrete or stone works best when you use a trowel.ne coat should be more than sufficient. If you have a smooth surface like a wall in your home masonry wire maybe use to support the stucco. You will need to apply two coats as one will just be to attach to the wire. Layers should never be more than one-quarter inch thick.
  5. Cool overcast days work best applying stucco as direct sunlight tends to make it dry to quickly and it could give you problems such as cracking. Do not apply if there is a chance for frost either as this will damage the finish. Applying stucco as you can see is not that tough once you follow these easy to do steps.
