How to Make Sushi

Sushi is a Japanese dish that is very popular worldwide.

Ingredients

  • sushi-grade fish
  • vegetables (preferably two types)
  • short-grained rice
  • rice vinegar
  • nori
  • ginger root
  • wasabi
  • soy sauce

Steps to Make Sushi

  1. For the vegetables, use cucumber, carrots, or asparagus. Use Japanese rice vinegar for best results. Nori is a sheet of seaweed used for rolling sushi.
  2. When your ingredients are ready, prepare the sushi rice. Heat the rice vinegar with salt and sugar until they are dissolved. Then rinse the rice with cold water for five to six minutes. Steam the rice in a rice cooker. Cover the rice with a slightly damp piece of cloth. This will keep the rice moist. Do not put the rice in the refrigerator.
  3. Roll the sushi. Take a bamboo mat and put a sheet of plastic wrap over it. Bamboo mats are normally available in commercial sushi kits. Place the nori on the bamboo mat. The shiny part of the nori should be facing down.
  4. Take the cooked rice and spread it on the nori. Your hands should be slightly damp while doing the said step. Remember to spread only a thin layer of rice so you could see the nori under it. Leave half an inch at the edges of the nori, and rub a small amount of hot water on it. This will make the sides of the nori stick together well.
  5. Line up your remaining ingredients in the middle of the nori. Hold the edge of the mat closest to you. Carefully roll the sushi away from you. Tighten the roll and unwrap the bamboo. Finally, you can slice the full roll on a cutting board. Sushi is best served with wasabi and soy sauce with ginger root.
