How to Write a Sentence

While constructing a sentence may seem simple, writing a properly constructed, grammatically correct sentence can be challenging. With attention to detail and understanding of the structure of a sentence, this task can be easily accomplished.

Required Materials

  • Paper

Required Tools

  • Pencil
  • Computer
  • Printer

Instructions

  1. Every sentence must have a subject. The subject is the person, place or thing (noun or pronoun) that the sentence is about. Choose the subject that you wish to write a sentence about, such as “man,” “horse” or “dog.”
  2. Decide if your sentence is an action sentence or a descriptive sentence. If your sentence is an action sentence, then it is a sentence about what the subject is doing. If your sentence is a descriptive sentence, then your sentence will describe the subject.
  3. When writing an action sentence, you must use a predicate. A predicate is a word or group of words that describe what your subject is doing, such as “will run” or “is running.”
  4. When writing a descriptive sentence, you must use an adjective along with a verb. An adjective is a word that describes your subject, such as “attractive,” “miserly” or “unhealthy.” The verb in the sentence expresses the existence of the adjective, such as “is attractive,” “was miserly” or “is unhealthy.”
  5. To spice up your sentence, you can add a prepositional phrase. A prepositional phrase adds additional description to your sentence and can describe the location or time the event in your sentence happens. A prepositional phrase does not express a complete thought and is made up of several words, such as “in the morning,” “at the High School” or “in the field.”
  6. The next consideration for your sentence is punctuation. If you are writing a statement, you should end the sentence with a period. A question should end with a question mark. An exciting statement should end with an exclamation point.
  7. If you have a list within your sentence, separate the listed items by commas.
