How to Write a Love Letter

Writing a love letter can truly show someone how much you care for and love them. A few simple facts need to be taken into consideration to make your letter and you unforgettable.

Love Letter Presentation

Start writing your love letter on beautiful stationery. If nothing else, choose a paper that’s thicker than ordinary paper. Your recipient will keep this token of your love for years to come. A thicker paper on a heavier stock will last through time. Also, try to write as neat as possible. Plan what you would like to say ahead of time. Stay away from scratching out words or using correction fluid. Start over if you must. Don’t even think about typing your love letter. Typing it would make the note very impersonal and not nearly as special as it should be.

Addressing Your Love Letter

Starting your letter with “Dear Madam” or “To Whom It May Concern” is too businesslike and formal. Begin with an endearing opener such as, “Dearest Joe” or “My Darling Jessica.” This will personalize your letter. This also gives the note an informal tone, which is what a love letter should express.

Don’t Forget the Date

This love letter will be a token of your love for years to come. Put a date on the letter so your recipient can remember this occasion for the rest of his or her life.

Beginning Your Love Letter

Why do you love this person? Why are you writing the love letter? Begin by clearly stating your purpose. Explain why you are taking the time to put your feelings down on paper.

The Body of Your Love Letter

Here is where you will add the real content or “meat” of your letter. Here are some examples on how to fill this section with details.

  • Elaborate on why you love this person
  • Tell him or her how wonderful you feel when you are together
  • Talk about how your love began or when you met
  • Tell your recipient all the things you love about him or her
  • Discuss how his or her love makes you feel
  • Explain how you couldn’t imagine life without him or her
  • Discuss what you want for your future together
  • Recall favorite memories and stories

Just remember to be creative and explain your love from your heart! Don’t be too generic either. Give real examples that relate to your relationship.

Time to Close Your Love Letter

Use your closing to validate your feelings and purpose. Reiterate why you feel this way about your lover. End with a closing such as “Love, Joan” or “Yours Forever, Jimmy.” Make your closing personal and make sure it expresses your love and care.

Signed, Sealed, and Delivered

Personally sign your love letter and seal it in an envelope. Deliver the letter by mail or in person to your loved one. Hopefully you’re lucky enough to get a love letter written just for you in response!
