How to Texture Drywall

If you are looking for a way to spice up your walls, you may want to consider texturing your drywall. Texturing drywall is not very hard to do, but it can dramatically change the appearance of your walls.

Required Materials

  • A large bucket of premixed drywall joint compound
  • cloth

Required Tools

  • A wide-bladed taping knife or straight-edged trowel

Instructions

  1. Clear everything off of the walls that you are going to texture (this includes outlet and light switch covers).
  2. Move furniture away from the wall and cover it with plastic.
  3. Fully cover the floor with drop cloths.
  4. Remove any existing wallpaper from the walls. If you skip this step and leave the wallpaper, it can loosen and force you to entirely re-do the walls.
  5. Apply a thin layer of compound along the corners, baseboards and ceilings. Unless you are looking for an especially rough texture on the walls, you should aim for an 1/8″ layer (keep in mind you are looking for a varied texture, so you don’t have to obsess over making the layer an exact thickness).
  6. Begin applying the drywall compound to a small surface area of the wall.
  7. Once you have a small surface area covered with compound, you can texture it. There are no rules when it comes to choosing how you want to go about texturing. Drywall compound can be textured with everything from wallpaper brushes to your fingers. Don’t be afraid to be creative, and look at pictures of drywall texturing online if you need additional inspiration.
  8. Switch back and forth between Steps Six and Seven until the entire wall has been covered with drywall compound and textured.
  9. Make sure the drywall compound is completely dry before you uncover your furniture and move it back to its original position.
