Radiators are simple devices that radiate heat in vehicles, electronics and in building as well they do this by the process of thermal radiation. According to wikipedia it does this in automobiles with a liquid-cooled internal combustion engine. The radiator is connected to channels running through the engine and cylinder head, through which a coolant is pumped. This liquid may be water (in climates where water is unlikely to freeze), but is more commonly a mixture of water and antifreeze in proportions appropriate to the climate. And also a small amount of corrosion inhibitor. The radiator transfers the heat from the fluid inside to the air outside, thereby cooling the engine. If the radiator has sprung a leak it may cause overheating however radiator leaks are quite quick fixes and in some cases a temporary solution can be made until and more permanent fix can be achieved.
Required Materials
- Duct Tape
- Ground Black Pepper
- Eggs
- Cornmeal
- Required Tools:
- Gloves (optional)
Instructions
- The first step is the most important that is to ensure that the engine is off and that the radiator is cool enough
- Identify the source of the leak
- If the leak is found in the hose it can be patched with the duct tape the duct tape will last for approximately one week which gives time for the hose to be replaced
- If the leak is found in the radiator this is where the ground black pepper comes in remove the radiator cap making sure it is not hot. Add one or two tablespoons of the black pepper. Pepper lodges into holes and swells up when in the water thus effectively sealing the hole.
- The eggs and cornmeal function in a similar capacity as the black pepper when the water in the radiator reaches a boil the eggs spread and harden also blocking the leaks and its basically the same for the cornmeal.
- Replace the cap on the radiator
- As soon as it is possible schedule a meeting with a mechanic also tell him of the temporary measures taken if fixing the problem.
Tip
- In some cases the black pepper seals the leak so well that it may last for an extended period of time.
