How to Start in Safe Mode
If you are having trouble with your computer, you may want to launch it in Safe Mode. Safe Mode can be a useful tool for troubleshooting your computer because it can allow you to work around directory damage or issues caused by software. However, keep in mind that because Safe Mode is designed for troubleshooting, it will temporarily disable many of your computer’s features.
Instructions
Starting in Safe Mode with Windows XP and Windows Vista
- Close any open programs and restart your computer.
- As soon as your computer shuts down and begins to restart, hold down the F8 key.
- Once you see the Windows Advanced Options menu, choose one of the displayed options and press Enter on your keyboard.
- You will then see the Boot menu. In blue at the bottom, you will see the words Safe Mode. You can now select the installation you would like to start and press Enter on your keyboard.
- When you are ready to exit safe mode, close any open programs and restart your computer once again (this time without pressing the F8 key).
Starting in Safe Mode with Mac OS X
- Close any open programs and shut down your computer.
- Once your computer is shut down, press the power button to turn your computer back on.
- As soon as you hear the start-up tone, hold down the Shift key.
- Let go of the Shift key once you see the gray Apple and the spinning gear that indicates your progress.
- When you are ready to exit safe mode, close any open programs and restart your computer once again (this time without pressing the Shift key).
