How to Sew a Button

Sometime during your lifetime you will lose a button on a shirt or your favorite jacket. Getting it back on is not as hard as it may seem. Most people do not realize how relative easy it is if you follow some real simple steps. Let us look at what you will need and the steps to get it back where it needs to be.

Materials and Tools required

  • The Button
  • Needle-Do not use cross-stitch needles or ones with small eyes
  • Thread- Make sure it is strong and a matching color

Instructions

  1. Cut off around six to eight inches of thread as it is better to have more than not enough. If you do have a needle threader use if not wet the ends of the thread so it will be easier for it to go through the needle eye. Once you have the thread through the need tie the ends. It is always best to do it a few times to give you thread plenty of strength. Now you will have a loop of thread hanging in your needle. You are now ready to get started attaching the button to your garment.
  2. Poke the needle through the inside of the garment that way you will not show the knot as it will stay hidden. Pull the needle threw giving it a slight pull to make sure it will not go through all the way. Now pull the needle through one hole in the button and down through the other. Now you will be on the inside of the garment again. Do this several times as the more you do it the stronger the bond will be. Take your time and make sure each pass go through a hole in the button. If you use a four hole button crossing is a very good idea. The main reason for that is you will get more strength from this method.
  3. Continue the sewing process until you have about a half-inch of slack in your thread as you do not want to use it all. When the thread is on the inside go through one more time not passing through the button just the cloth. Use the loop of thread to tie a few knots to make the bond stronger. All the knots should lie against the thread and cut off the excess thread that is left.
  4. Having a tight strong bond is crucial as you want to make sure the button is not loose. If you do not have a tight bond it can come off in the wash.
  5. Replacing a lost button is not as tough as it seems once you know the steps you need to take. After a few times you will be an old pro at it and people may start coming to you for your services. Sewing on a button as you can see is something everyone can do once they know the process of doing it.
