How to Repair Cracks in Fiberglass Boats
One of the positive attributes of fiberglass is that it is easily repairable, unlike the wood on wooden boats. The next time you are faced with a repair job on your boat, try repairing it yourself before running to call a technician.
Required Materials
- de-waxing solvent
- paste wax
- tape
- Formica or Plexiglas
- polyester resin
- gelcoat
- primer
- hardening agent
Required Tools
- brush
- cutting implement
- repair kit
- resin roller
- disc sander
Instructions
- Cutting the Damaged Area – Identify the damaged area and then neatly cut it off. In order to ensure that the entire damaged area is removed, keep a safe margin of half an inch between the edge of the damage and the undamaged sections.
- Application of the De-Waxing Solvent – Before making an attempt to repair the hole, wash away all of the wax using a de-waxing solvent. This will ensure a better repair and a stronger bond.
- Grinding – After you get rid of the wax, use a disc sander to carefully grind the area surrounding the hole. Grind the area until a uniform surface emerges. You can then proceed with the application of paste wax (usually applied in a heavy coat).
- Using Formica or Plexiglas – Cover the hole completely with a piece of either Formica or Plexiglas and carefully secure this with tape. This serves as the backer.
- Mixing the Materials – Mix all the elements (i.e. resin and hardening agent) together and then fill up the damaged gaps with the mixture until it is evenly leveled to the hull of the boat. In order to achieve a smooth and glossy finish, polish the area with cellophane or release paper.
- Gelcoat – If the extent of damage is only skin deep, sand the area thoroughly. Then use the de-waxing solvent before applying the plastic filler (i.e. gelcoat). Wait until the plastic filler is completely cured and then apply the second coat. Usually, two coats of gelcoat will be sufficient. Finally sand, the plastic filler until you achieve a smooth finish and the surface is leveled. Follow with an application of primer.
Tips and Warnings
- Follow safety instructions and wear goggles and a dust mask to protect eyes, lungs and skin.
