How to Repair a Fiberglass Hull on Boats
Although you may take care of your boat, cracks and damages can never be avoided. For example, if your hull is made of fiberglass, there may be instances where objects at the sea may damage it. But through a set of steps, you can easily repair the fiberglass hull of your boat.
Steps to Repair a Fiberglass Hull on Boats
- Take the boat to a dry area. This is especially helpful when you are in the water and you notice your hull is damaged, immediately go to dry land.
- Examine the damaged part. Take a screwdriver and tap the spot with it. If you hear a solid noise, the hull may be only slightly damaged. But if the sound is hollow, you may need to do more extensive repair to the hull.
- Mark it by drawing a circle around it. Then using your tools, remove the damaged part carefully. If the damaged part is around 3 inches small, you normally have to refinish an area that is 12 inches. In addition, repairing a fiberglass hull from the inside is generally better. This is because you would do significantly less finishing work in the said case.
- Remove the wax on the area you took the damaged part from. Then, using a disk sander and sand paper, sand down the exterior area surrounding the hole.
- Mask the hull. Apply formica in the hole. The formica will eventually take the shape of the area.
- Cut the fiberglass fabric. The fabric should be one inch wider than the hole�s size. Then, you need to apply resin on the fiberglass and allow it to cure. Ensure that the fiberglass is firmly placed on the area.
- Apply the gel coat is the next step. You can either spray the gel coat or use a brush to apply it. Then take a mat and apply resin on it. Compress the mat against the gel coat.
- Apply the finish. Take a rectangular mat and use a resin roller to smooth out the mat. Place the mat on the damaged area and seal it with PVA alcohol. After several hours, check the area and polish it carefully.
