The porch or deck of a house is constantly subjected to elements that can considerably speed up its degeneration. Since this a high-traffic area, maintaining the deck is very important.

Required Materials

  • new deck plank with the same measurements as an existing plank
  • stain material and brushes
  • deck screws

Required Tools

  • carpentry square
  • cordless drill with philips screwdriver bit
  • tape measure
  • pencil/marker
  • claw hammer
  • chisel
  • screwdrivers
  • circular saw
  • safety glasses
  • gloves
  • dust mask

Instructions

  1. Determine the Nature of the Damage - It is important to determine whether you want the entire plank to be replaced or just a partial plank, so make a reasoned assessment.
  2. Safety Measures - Proceed with caution and follow all manufacturers’ guidelines when handling tools. Make sure that you wear your safety glasses, gloves, and a dust mask.
  3. Preparation - Clear any blocks or impediments from the deck area before proceeding. If you decide to stain the deck plank, make sure you do it at least one day in advance.
  4. Removal and Replacement - Using a drill, remove the screws that are screwed to the joists of the deck plank. To avoid damage, make sure you do not exert too much twisting force when removing the screws. If you discover that they are too deeply embedded in the wood, use a chisel to remove them.
  5. Cutting and Installation - Identify the severity of the damage. If the damaged plank is still in one piece, use it as a model to cut out the new plank, copying the exact measurements. If this is not possible, measure the length of another plank on the deck. Cut out a fresh plank and position it in the space where the old plank used to be. Drive a few screws into the joist locations in order to firmly hold the fresh plank in place.
