How to Pick a Lock

There may be times when you would need to pick a lock. For instance, if you forgot or lost the key to the lock of your house’s door, you should know the ways to open the lock without the key. Here are the steps in picking a lock.

Instructions

  1. You should know how the lock works. Find the side wall of the lock and scrape it. By doing so, you would understand how to click the pins in the lock. A common type of lock includes a cylinder that can rotate within the housing. This type of lock opens when you push the pins up to let the cylinder turn.
  2. You need to have a pick and a tension wrench. Locate the lower portion of the keyhole and place the wrench at the said area. Examine the cylinder and determine which way it should turn to open the lock. You can do this by using the wrench to apply a rotary force on the cylinder. Feel how the cylinder stops. If the stop feels like it has more give, then you have found the way the cylinder turns.
  3. Use the wrench to apply a light rotary force toward the right direction, and hold the wrench. The amount of force needed varies from one lock to another, so you may try a number of times.
  4. Insert the pick at the upper part of the keyhole. Using the pick, feel the pins and try to push them up. Find the pin that requires the greatest amount of force to push up. Afterwards, push up the said pin until it sets.
  5. Do the same with the remaining pins. Finally, you can use the wrench to turn the cylinder and open the lock.
