How to make Plexiglas windows for a deer stand
A deer stand is a secondary hunting essential for recreational deer hunters. It offers the hunter protection from the elements while allowing him to wait patiently in its confines for passing deer. It is elevated high off the ground and is portable, making it possible for it to be set up in areas heavily populated by deer. The deer stand is likely to be used for several hours at a time because of the unpredictability of knowing when and if a deer will be encountered. Deer stands may be made or purchased, either type has its individual merits. Many stands are fitted with Plexiglas to allow the hunter to observe the deer without being seen. Constructing this convenient item is fairly easy to do, once the instructions are followed carefully.
Required Tools
- Saw
- Drill
- Nails
- Screw Driver
- Marker
Required Materials
- Plexiglas
- Sliding Aluminium Frames
Instructions
- Begin by determining the size that will be used for the windows. Once this is deduced buy the appropriately sized Plexiglas to fit each window.
- 2. Measure and mark the areas with a measuring tape and a marker. It is more advantageous to place the windows at eye level. If sitting down while looking out the window is preferred, adjust the placement of the windows to suit this condition.
- Cut out the premeasured spaces with a saw.
- When the spaces for the Plexiglas have been made, the aluminium frames can be fitted and installed. Aluminium frames are preferable to wooden frames because they allow the window to be slid open during hunting. Install the aluminium frames in all the allotted spaces using a drill and nails to secure them. Ensure that an area is left open in each to insert the Plexiglas into the frames. If using wooden frames, insert the Plexiglas into the frames prior to installing them in the allocated openings.
- When all the aluminium frames are positioned, insert the Plexiglas into each frame. Be certain to test the sliding motion of the windows. They should be easily opened without producing any accompanying noise in the process. Any noise may possibly frighten away deer, reducing the overall efficacy of the overall unit.
- Fit the final ends of the aluminium frames together to finish the project.
Tips and Warnings
- Measure the windows carefully before acquiring the Plexiglas. Making adjustments to the size of Plexiglas being used by cutting is a very delicate procedure that is best handled by an experienced professional. Being precise is therefore very important
- Wooden frames are not ideal as they are less weather resistant and do not offer much flexibility. If wooden frames will be used ensure to treat them with paint or a stain to reduce weather damage.
- It is more advantageous to install the windows on all four sides of the dear stand for optimum viewing.
- When hunting and using the deer stand use a harness for added protection. It is not uncommon for hunters to fall from the high elevation of the deer stand.
