How to Make a Toga

Are you considering throwing a toga party? Worried that your toga may not be as authentic or attractive as that of your guests? Read here to get the inside scoop on designing the perfect toga!

Required Material

• 5 to 6 yards of fabric (People of average height require 5 feet)

Required Tools

• Sewing machine
• Pins
• Rope or length of cloth to tie the toga at the waist

Before you start

• Hem the edges of your fabric over so that the cloth does not fray.

Wrapping your Toga

1. Remove your clothing except for your undershorts. Starting at your back, wrap the fabric around your body under your arms, so that your arms are bare and the fabric reaches nearly to your knees. Wrap the material 1-½ times around your body.
2. Throw the rest of the cloth over one shoulder and pin it securely to the back of the fabric where you started wrapping.
3. Drape the fabric smoothly in front so that the cloth looks attractive.
4. Secure the toga around the waist with a belt, rope, or piece of cloth of the same material.
5. Accessorize: Consider wearing open-toed sandals or going barefoot. You may decide to place a wreath of flowers or tiara in your hair. Wearing gold bracelets or necklaces enhances the Romanesque look.

Tips

• Females should be particularly careful to wrap the cloth tightly around their bodies and tie it securely to avoid potential embarrassment.
• Don’t use a bed sheet – it’s obvious, and it looks tacky. Besides, cheap fabric is less expensive than a bed sheet.
• Select cloth that has a Romanesque appearance – or use white fabric. This will make your toga more authentic.
