How to Make a Rocket
Firing a rocket is an enjoyable way to create excitement during special events. Although most people think making a simple rocket involves complex procedures, it can be done through a few simple steps.
Steps to Make a Rocket
- You need to mix black powder. This substance serves as the propellant of the rocket. Here are the ingredients in making the black powder:
- Potassium Nitrate
- Air Float Charcoal
- 80 Mesh Charcoal
- Sulfur
- After you have gathered the ingredients, use this ratio to determine the amount of each substance: 16:6:3:4. This ratio follows the sequence of the above ingredients.
- Place the ingredients together in a container and grind them. Continue grinding until you make a fine and free flowing powder. Then pass the powder through a steel mesh. Ideally, the steel mesh you should be a 20 mesh.
- Take a 4 Oz engine tube. You can either get a used engine tube or purchase a new one. This is for the body of the rocket.
- Carefully place the fine black powder mixture in the tube. The mixture should fill 80% of the tube. This will allow a little room for air in the container.
- Take some clay and moisten it slightly. Put the clay in the space for air you have previously provided.
- Using a sharp thin object such as a needle, create a hole through the clay. This hole is for your rockets fuse. You can create a fuse by taking a cotton string and coating it with the fine black powder.
- Attach the fuse through the clay to the underside of the tube. Tape a wooden stick to the rocket, and install the stick on a sandy surface.
- You are now ready to light the fuse and watch the rocket boost upward.
