Making pillowcases as a sewing project can be quite simple and fun. Whether you have years of experience or just a novice in sewing, you’ll enjoy making a pillowcase out of different fabrics and materials. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to make a simple pillowcase.
Required Materials
- prewashed fabric 45 inches wide
- matching thread
- scissors
- tape measure
- straight pins
- sewing machine
- sewing ruler or yardstick
- fabric marking pencil
- iron
Steps to Make a Pillowcase
- Determine the size of your pillowcase. Measure and cut the right amount of fabric for your pillowcase. A 45-inch wide fabric is just the right size for standard pillowcases.
- Make sure that the pillow’s length will go inside to determine the length of the pillowcase. Add 5 ‘ inches more for the pillow’s seams and cuff.
- Ensure that the pillowcase has square and straight edges. Fold the fabric laterally, and match the fabric’s selvage edges. This will be the fabric’s span, while the non-selvage portions will serve as the fabric’s sides. Trim off the fabric if necessary to make it straight. Open out the fabric after trimming.
- Bring together the fabric’s wrong side and hold them over. Press about a ‘-inch-wide seam along either non-selvage sides. Sew up the seam.
- With the wrong sides joined, make a fold and press about 4 inches of the fabric on the same side to give the 4-inch cuff.
- Put the right sides of the fabric together by folding it lengthwise and matching the fabric’s selvage edges. Pin the edges together, while checking that the cuff’s seams are aligned.
- Stitch together the selvage edges. Then stitch the bottom edge while making an allowance for a 5/8-inch seam.
- Turn the pillowcase’s right side out then put in the pillow.
