How to Make a Hovercraft

Most people think that hovercrafts are very sophisticated structures that are difficult to construct. However, through the steps below, you can build it in a few hours using ordinary materials.

Required Materials

  • air blower
  • cardboard
  • mill plastic
  • duct tape
  • utility knife
  • stapler
  • hole saw

Steps to Make a Hovercraft

  1. Prepare the cardboard.
  2. Cut it into the following dimension: 2-4 feet x 4-6 feet and convert to inches.
  3. Use the hole saw to create a hole with a 5-inch radius on one end of the cardboard. The hole’s size should be the same as the blowing end.
  4. Cover one end of the cardboard with the mill plastic. The edge of the mill plastic should overlap the other end of the cardboard.
  5. Staple the ends of the mill plastic to the cardboard’s surface.
  6. Place duct tape on the edges. See to it all edges are sealed. Air should not be able to pass through the duct tape.
  7. Take the mill plastic’s middle portion and staple it to the cardboard.
  8. Use your utility knife to cut six 4-inch circles from the mill plastic.
  9. Hold in place with substantial weight on the middle of the board. This is to test the hovercraft if it can float.
  10. Aim the air blower to the hole in the cardboard.
  11. Turn on the air blower and let it blow air in the target area. The plastic on the bottom of the board should inflate.
  12. Gently push one end of the board. The hovercraft should move accordingly.
  13. Once it is done, remove the test material and try to sit on the center of the board yourself. You can ask someone to push one end of the craft for you.
