Steps to Install Crown Molding

  1. Carry out the preparatory steps. Find the measurements of the linear footage you need to span the portions you will trim out. To prepare for mistakes, add 10 percent to the measurement. Choose the design for your crown molding. Home improvement shops and the Internet are good sources of crown molding designs.
  2. Get the trim you will use. As much as possible, purchase trim that will require little splicing. Using a miter saw, cut the trim to the correct lengths. This depends on the style you chose.
  3. Join the sections. Install the first piece of crown molding into the corner. Make sure the second piece correctly matches the form of the first one so that it will fit properly with the first piece. Continue installing the next pieces. Keep in mind that for inner corners, the bottom of the molding should be the longest edge.
  4. Remove the excess wood on the backside of the molding. Ensure you are following the profile line you have started.
  5. Do the finishing touches. Find the location of the structure’s joists. Create pilot holes on the molding to keep it from splitting. Then secure the molding with a set of nails. Next, apply wood putty on all nail holes to provide a smooth appearance.
