How to Install an Above Ground Pool

An above ground pool is an inexpensive alternative to in-ground swimming pools. Unlike in-ground pools, above ground pools are less permanent and do not require a professional for installation.

Whether you choose a hard sided pool or a soft sided inflatable pool, any competent DIY-er can put together their own above ground pool in no time. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to install an above ground pool.

Required Materials

  • circular above ground swimming pool kit
  • stakes
  • sand
  • sprinkler

Steps to Install an Above Ground Pool

  1. Planning
    • Check your area’s building codes and by-laws on provisions for installing above ground pools. There might be some legal obligations you have to observe before constructing your pool.
    • Select a level area to locate the pool. Level the ground if the area is on an incline. Clear the area of vegetation and any kind of debris that could obstruct the construction of the pool.
    • Ensure that the selected area is away from any utility or gas lines. Make sure that these are not within the proximity of the pool.
  2. Ground Preparation
    • Level and compact the ground by soaking the selected area with a sprinkler for two hours. Let the area dry completely before repeating the process.
    • Mark out the diameter of the pool by placing a pole at the center of your area. Attach a string half the width of the pool to the pole. While holding the string, walk in a circle and mark out the circumference with a chalk.
    • Then lay a 3-inch layer of sand as a base within the marked area. Rake the sand until it becomes leveled. Make sure that the sand is compact and even before laying a protective pad over it.
  3. Frame Assembly
    • Lay out the bottom frame or ring of the pool on the selected area. The ring generally consists of a track and a series of plates that interlock together.
    • Stake the plates into the ground to provide secure anchorage for the pool.
    • Install the side braces.
  4. Wall Assembly
    • Unfurl the wall and hold it upright to fit it to the bottom tracks. Ask the assistance of several people for this step.
    • Fit the wall into the track on the ring one section at a time. Ensure that the fit is snug and secure.
  5. Installing the Pool Liner
    • Secure the pool liner that you’ve laid earlier to the walls of the pool. Install an additional overlap liner to provide a better seal.
    • Put in the inner stabilizer along the top of the wall of the pool. This generally comes in sections that will connect to the upright supports. Fill the pool with water once the stabilizers are in place.
