How to Install a Home HVAC Unit
HVAC, which stands for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning, is a thermodynamic principle that is most applied in our homes. It is not uncommon to install an HVAC unit in our homes because it provides us good ventilation and comfort whenever we need it.
Installing a home heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system may not be a casual job for any DIY-er. Nonetheless, most of the process involved in its installation can be accomplished with the right know-how on a few basic guidelines. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to install a home HVAC unit using a two-zone system.
Required Materials
- heater
- five wire cable
- 18 gauge wire (runs over 100 feet)
- dampers
- zone controller
- thermostat
- drill with bits
- screws
- wire pull
- wire stripper
- stud finder
Steps to Install a Home HVAC Unit
- Choose a thermostat. The thermostat that you choose will depend on the HVAC system that you plan to install. A complex HVAC unit requires a more sophisticated thermostat. However, a two-zone system requires a simple thermostat with settings for heating and cooling.
- Set the thermostat at a height of approximately 5 inches to get a good flow of air. Do not place it under direct sunlight, on an exterior wall, behind a door, close to a vent, or next to electrical systems.
- Choose the most ideal zone in your house to install your HVAC unit. An ideal location is one that is near the furnace to make the system more effective and allow ease of installation.
- Install the thermostat by finding the stud in the location you have chosen. Keep in mind the conditions mentioned in step 2. Also, place the thermostat where the cable will not run into obstacles in the inner wall. After choosing a proper location, drill a hole in the wall. Use a wire pull to draw the wire to the HVAC unit.
- Fix the damper controller to a wall near the HVAC unit. Make sure to run cables to the HVAC unit and thermostat in both zones.
- Verify and check the proper installation of the unit.
