How to Grow Sugar Crystals

Learning how to grow sugar crystals can mean a lot especially to children. This thing is not that hard to do because the process is somehow similar to that of creating salt crystals. In addition, kids will surely love to do this one because they can eat something nice, sweet and yummy at the end of this task. Furthermore, they can also use this as an excellent project at school, particularly as a science project. By simply doing this, kids can get high grades and a great tasting treat.

Materials Needed

There are a few simple materials needed before anyone can start this specific task. A stirring spoon, food coloring and a paper clip will all play important parts later on. In addition, one needs to bring in a cotton string, a pencil and a glass jar. Furthermore, set aside 1-cup of water to go with a saucepan, oven mitts and at least 3-cups of sugar.

Steps

Before learning how to grow sugar crystals, one needs a cup of water. Set the stove to medium high heat and then boil the water using a kettle. After this, pour the boiling liquid inside the glass jar. Follow this up by adding the sugar. Slowly stir the liquid mixture. Do not rush this step because it may significantly affect the outcome of the project. At some point, the sugar will stop dissolving. When this moment comes and the sugar begins to settle at the lower part of the jar, simply add the preferred food coloring. Put in at least two to three drops.

Take the pencil and then tie one end of a string at the middle part of it. Use the opposite end of the string to hold a paper clip. Be sure that the knots will not get loose. Position the pencil at the middle part of the opening of the jar. Lay down the string right into the glass container. Set the paper clip hanging and almost touching the lowest part of the container. When all are set, secure the jar in a location where no one can move or touch it. Wait for 24 hours for the results. After that short span of time, the sugar crystals are very much visible right on the paper clip.

Additional Tips

Use a nice clean paper towel to cover the jar. This will keep the material clean. Instead of using a paper clip, other alternative materials can also be used such as fishing weight. Choose a jar that is more likely to withstand extreme hotness. More importantly, supervise kids while doing this project.
