How to Grow Spirulina

Growing spirulina can be done through easy to follow steps.

Steps to Grow Spirulina

  1. Choose the best site for it. Consider the weather in the area. Spirulina grows best in warm weather. It does not grow in places that are constantly cold.

The area needs to have adequate direct sunlight. Spirulina uses sunlight to create its own nutrients. The more sunlight it receives, the more nutrients it can make for itself. Also, the area needs to have a clean source of water. Make sure the water is alkaline and contains a controlled amount of salt.

  2. Create the actual place for the spirulina. Generally, a concrete pond is ideal for this purpose. You may require the help of a professional in this major step. The cement in the pond has to be hardened properly, dried, and whitewashed. Alternatively, you can create the area for your spirulina using plastic film that includes U.V. protection.
  3. Set the spirulina in it. If you purchased spirulina from a shop, make sure you follow the instructions included in the package. To encourage better growth, provide frequent and sufficient watering. Algae and other impurities should not be present in the water. You may also use salty water, but you must test its contents first before pouring it on the spirulina.

Spirulina also grows better if you use fertilizers. These products give the additional nutrients needed by spirulina. However, make sure the fertilizer you will use is the soluble type. Never use fertilizers containing metals such as mercury and cadmium.
