- garden cutter
- pots
- potting soil
- zip lock bags
Steps to Grow Roses from Clippings
- If you have very good and fertile soil in your area, you can simply plant the rose clippings into the ground. Rose plants will eventually grow from the clippings. The climate in your area should also be mild for this to work.
- Make sure you provide enough watering and that the clippings are placed in the soil at a correct depth.
- Alternatively, you can start roses from clippings through the jar method. Get some clippings from roses you want to grow. The clippings should be cut to 6 inches long.
- Take a clear jar. This should be as large as a quart jar;
- Remove the leaves from the bottom of the clippings;
- Put the stems into the ground. You can also place the stems into a pot with potting soil. The stems should be 2 inches into the soil. Let the rest of the stems stick out of the soil.
- Place the jar over the stems.
- Water the earth around the edges of the jar at certain intervals. After 60 days, the stems will take root and leaves will then start to form.
- At this point, remove the jar and make sure the growing roses are safe from injury. The best time to do the jar method is during early fall or during spring.
- Meanwhile, you can also use sandwich bags to start roses from clippings.
- Take small 2-inch pots and fill them with potting soil.
- Place the rose stem halfway into the soil.
- Place the pot in a 1-gallon zip lock bag. You can use other types of plastic bags, but the zip lock type works the best. While letting the rose clippings grow, make sure the top of the bag never folds over. The clippings will rot when the top of the bag folds over, as air would not circulate through it.
