How to Grow Grapes
Growing your own grapes is definitely a worthwhile and enjoyable activity. You can share the fruits to your family and friends, and you can even start a business out of it. In addition, growing grapes is relatively easy. Below are the steps you need to do in this project.
Steps to Grow Grapes
- Choose which type of grape you want. The types of grapes include table, slipskin, and wine. The type you would grow should suit the climate in your area. You can ask the professional in your local plant nursery about the best types of grapes to grow in your city or state.
- Start planting. Find a spot in your property that has good soil and receives ample sunlight. Avoid planting grapes in a shady area as the plants would become susceptible to diseases and fungus.
- Amend the soil. This will make the soil become loamy, loose, and well-drained. Since grapes are deep-rooted fruits, it is a good idea to amend the soil very deeply. Add organic compost to a depth of 26-36 inches.
- Provide support for the grape vines. A trellis is an excellent support for this type of fruit. A trellis also keeps the grapes above the soil’s surface, thus preventing them from rotting.
- Prune the grape vines. Do this when the vines are dormant. Grapes are produced on wood that is a year old. Keep the framework’s basic form. Finally, remove the long runners during the middle of the season. This keeps the plants under control.
