How to Grow Clematis
Clematis, queen vines, are divided into 3 categories: Early flowering, late flowering and repeat bloomer. Like lilies, clematis grows well in full sun, but their roots must be shaded or mulched. Clematis requires little space and grows exceptionally well under other plants, like ferns or roses.
Tools
- Shovel
- Standard gardening tools
Materials
- Clematis plant
- Organic materials (compost or peat moss)
- Bone meal
Instructions
- Decide on the type of clematis and its growing site. Some clematis varieties grow well on fences, trellis, trees and up walls without being tied. Others may need a lattice or other structure to climb on.
- Buy desired clematis from a local nursery or online. A better variety may be available online, but at a nursery you can get personal assistance and check the health of a plant.
- If starting with a very small plant, plant it in a shaded area or in a pot.
- When the clematis is ready to transfer to its final site, dig a hole 6 inches deep in well rotted soil. Mix the soil with organic material ensuring that the soil is kept moist.
- Place the clematis in the hole with its crown two inches below the soil line.
- Put a few tablespoons of bone meal into the hole to encourage strong root growth.
- Fill the hole.
- To encourage new growth, cut the stems just above where there are healthy leaf buds, around 11 inches from the ground.
- Water regularly during the first months after planting until the plant is established.
- Place a large rock or another plant directly in front of the clematis to keep the roots cool. Though clematis prefers full or partial sun, they do not like warm roots.
Tips and Warnings
- Clematis comes in 3 groups. Group 1 clematis needs to be pruned lightly, immediately after flowering or if not, it should be left to flower on the previous year’s growth. Only remove the dead and untidy stems and cut them just above a leaf bud that is still alive.
- Groups 2 and 3 clematis will usually flower later on after the middle of summer. They flower with new growth and so it is important to prune them in February to let them grow before the flowering season. Cut back all the stems so that they are 12-14 inches from the ground, always cutting just above the leaf bud.
- It is important not to let clematis roots dry out during growth; lack of moisture will do the most harm to the plant. Water your plant well and provide shade on very hot days.
- Don’t worry if your clematis does not grow much in the first year. Clematis usually blossom in their third season.
- Clematis combines greatly with other plants and can create a beautiful backdrop for a flower bed.
