How to Get a Passport

A passport is the most easily recognized travel document that can quickly certify the identity and nationality of its holder. It is a legal document issued by a national government that gives authority for the entry to or exit from a country.

US passports are no exceptions to these basic functions. You will need a passport to enter and exit out of the United States from most countries. Given its prime importance, the process for acquiring a passport should be treated conscientiously and meticulously. Applications should only be made to the US government and not through commercial passport application agencies. This article provides an overview on the process of applying for a passport for the first time or in person.

Who should apply in person?

An applicant should apply in person if the following conditions apply:

  • Applying for your first US passport;
  • Applicant is under age 16;
  • Previous US passport was issued when the applicant was under age 16;
  • Previous US passport was lost, stolen, or damaged;
  • Previous US passport was issued 15 years ago;
  • Applicant’s name has changed since the issuance of first US passport.

Steps to Submitting a Passport in Person

  1. Submit and complete Form DS-11 (Application for a US Passport).
    • Fill up the form.
    • To submit the application form,
  2. a) Apply in person at a passport acceptance facility designated by the Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs or to a passport agency.
    b) Include the additional documentation indicated by the Form DS-11.
    c) Present your Social Security number.
    d) Do not sign the application form unless instructed to do so by the acceptance agent.

  3. Submit evidence of US citizenship with Form DS-11. One of the following may be used:
    • Undamaged, previously issued US passport;
    • Certified birth certificate;
    • Record of birth abroad;
    • Certification of citizenship;
    • Naturalization certificate.
  4. Present acceptable identification.
    • Primary identification
    • a) Undamaged, previously issued US passport;
      b) Naturalization certificate;
      c) Driver’s license;
      d) Current city, state, or federal ID;
      e) Current military ID

    • Secondary identification
  5. a) A combination of signature document;
    b) an identifying witness that should be present during the application. The witness should have known the applicant for at least 2 years, a US citizen or a permanent resident, has a valid ID, and had filled out Form DS-71 (Affidavit of Identifying Witness).

  6. Pay the appropriate fees. The current passport fees and methods of payment may be checked online.
  7. Give 2 passport-size photos. These must be:
    • identical;
    • 2 X 2 in size;
    • Taken within the last 6 months and shows applicant’s current appearance;
    • Full face, front view, with white background;
    • Taken in normal street clothes, no uniforms, and no head gears;
    • Glasses, a hearing device, or other similar devices should be worn when taking the photo if they are used regularly.
