A passport is the most easily recognized travel document that can quickly certify the identity and nationality of its holder. It is a legal document issued by a national government that gives authority for the entry to or exit from a country.
US passports are no exceptions to these basic functions. You will need a passport to enter and exit out of the United States from most countries. Given its prime importance, the process for acquiring a passport should be treated conscientiously and meticulously. Applications should only be made to the US government and not through commercial passport application agencies. This article provides an overview on the process of applying for a passport for the first time or in person.
An applicant should apply in person if the following conditions apply:
a) Apply in person at a passport acceptance facility designated by the Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs or to a passport agency.
b) Include the additional documentation indicated by the Form DS-11.
c) Present your Social Security number.
d) Do not sign the application form unless instructed to do so by the acceptance agent.
a) Undamaged, previously issued US passport;
b) Naturalization certificate;
c) Driver’s license;
d) Current city, state, or federal ID;
e) Current military ID
a) A combination of signature document;
b) an identifying witness that should be present during the application. The witness should have known the applicant for at least 2 years, a US citizen or a permanent resident, has a valid ID, and had filled out Form DS-71 (Affidavit of Identifying Witness).
