How to Draw a Dragon

Drawing is one of the various forms of visual art that allows artists to express their emotions by illustrating images in a two-dimensional medium. Some of the materials that are useful to create nice and attractive drawings are stylus, inked brushes, graphite pencils and wax color pencils. Other materials that will be helpful in improving the drawings are charcoals, markers, crayons and chalks.

Most artists like to draw different animals. There are some techniques that amateurs should know when drawing animals like dragons. Below are some of the guidelines that starters should follow if they want to know how to draw a dragon.

Steps

The first step in illustrating a dragon is to draw the nostrils. To do this, draw two arcs that are adjacent to each other. Afterwards, sketch another arc at the top of the first two arcs. Sketch two slightly curved lines at the top of the nostrils to represent the nose of the dragon. Make rounded rectangle shape under the nostrils to represent the muzzle of the dragon. The tips of the shape should be connected to the outside parts of the right and left nostrils. Sketch a smaller rounded rectangle shape under the muzzle to draw the bottom jaw.

Sketch the head of the dragon. Start by making vertical arcs at the left and right part of the dragon’s face. The bottom of the arcs should touch the tips of the right nostril as well as the left nostril. Make two S shapes starting from the top of the left arc that represents the left part of the dragon’s face. To draw the right ear, sketch two inverted S shapes from the top of the right arc that represents the right part of the face. Draw an arc connecting the left and right ears of the dragon. Add other details like round eyes and horns.

Under the bottom jaw, sketch a big teardrop to make the body of the image. Draw several horizontal lines inside the body. Sketch a line at the left and right sides of the body. The lines should follow the shape of the upper part of the body. Sketch a half heart shape at the bottom of each line. At the bottom of each half heart shape, draw the feet of the dragon. Connect the feet of the dragon to the bottom part of the dragon’s body. Draw the arms and claws. Add wings and tails to make the illustration more interesting and attractive. Use a charcoal to shade some of the parts of the drawing.
