Cats are interesting creatures to draw since they can be made to look fat, cute, cuddly, or even menacing if you’re up to it. However, cats can become quite hard to draw since it would be hard to balance the shapes of the body in relation to the head and other parts. A good way to start to learn how to draw a cat would be to make simple non-detailed sketches.
Line Sketches without the Details
One big factor in making how to draw a cat difficult is the different details on a cat’s body. Some cats have stripes, others have multi-color patterns, and some have patches in a mosaic of different shapes. If you’re a beginner learning how to draw a cat, you can start by sketching cats minus all that detail. We’ll go over a few steps on just how a beginner may easily draw this furry animal.
Step One
You begin the process on how to draw a cat by drawing the head. You do this by drawing a circle. The next step is to draw two triangles on the top the circle positioned somewhat close to the sides. These will serve as the ears for the cat sketch.
Step Two
The next step on how to draw a cat would be to draw the eyes. Draw two almond shaped eyes near the center of the circle. It would appear like the eyes on an alien, which are slightly slanted. You draw a horizontal line on the center of each eye to mark the pupils.
Step Three
Next step is to draw the nose of your cat. Draw a ‘V’ at the very center of your circle and kind of thicken the lines to make the nose more prominent. Draw a small vertical line coming down from the center of the nose and then one ‘U’ shape going to the left from that center line and another one going to the right. That will serve as the mouth.
Step Four
Now we draw your cat’s legs. Draw a large ‘S’ shape on the left side starting from your cat’s left jaw. Draw another one parallel to the first shape but this time draw it closer to the center of the jaw. Erase the upper half of the new ‘S’-shape you just made. Draw the paws by making three small ‘U’ shapes at the end of the feet. Repeat the same process to make the other front leg only drawing reverse ‘S’ shapes instead.
Step Five
Draw two curved lines each coming from the shoulders going one of the feet. Add one foot to each side right next to the ones you have already drawn.
Step Six
You finally add a tail to your cat. Place two parallel curved lines on either the left or right side of the four feet and join the end with a curved ‘u’ shaped line. Erase any excess lines you may have made.
And that’s basically how to draw a cat using only a basic sketch. From this little sketch you can work on adding details or modifying the way your cat looks.
