How to deal with 80048820 error

Error code 80048820 appears to users after logging on to MSN-Messenger. It usually indicates that their system time or system date needs adjusting. Follow the following steps for troubleshooting the error, after each step check to see if the error is cured. If the error is not cured, try the next step.

Possible causes of Code 80048820

  1. Incorrect proxy setting for Internet Explorer.
  2. Softpub.dll may have become unregistered.
  3. The system clock may be showing an incorrect time or date.
  4. Firewall settings interference.

Fixing the proxy settings for Internet Explorer

  1. Launch Internet Explorer.
  2. Click Tools and then click Internet Options.
  3. From the dialogue box, go to the Connections tab.
  4. Click LAN Setting.
  5. Uncheck the ‘Use a Proxy Server for your LAN’ check box.
  6. Tick ‘Automatically Detect Settings’.

Registering softpub.dll

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Click Run.
  3. Type: regsvr32 softpub.dll.
  4. Restart MSN Messenger.

Resetting the time and date

    • With permissions, log on as a local administrator and set the computer’s clock to the correct date and time.

      Firewall settings

      1. Turn off the firewall temporarily.
      2. Check firewall settings such as Norton: “Block access to secure sites.”
      3. Make sure that Microsoft’s MSN Messenger is allowed full access through your firewall.
      4. For Netgrear: Enter IP address 192.168.0.1 in your browser’s address bar.
      5. Log on with ISP user name and password.
      6. Enter admin, password.
      7. Navigate to advanced menu, WAN set-up.
      8. Change MTU size to 1400.

      Miscellaneous troubleshooting steps

      1. Try a password of no more than 8 characters.
      2. If you are using IE 7.0 check the SSL Settings. Go to Internet Options, click Advanced tab, scroll down to the bottom. In the security section tick ‘Use SSL 2.0.’
      3. Unplug or restart your modem. This is particularly effective for cable modems.
      4. If you have just installed an anti-virus software, try disabling it to see if that cures the error.
      5. A drastic solution is uninstalling MSN messenger version 8.0 or 7.5 and installing Microsoft MSN version 7.0.
