Trout is considered an oily fish that although bony, is quite scrumptious when cooked. It is a favourite among recreational fishers. It is said that when a trout is captured in the hook and line it moves forcibly against the line to resist being caught. This challenging aspect of fishing for trout makes it an invigorating and fulfilling activity to pursue. Trout has been found to contain the lowest levels of dioxin of all known oily fishes. Dioxin is a contaminant that is detrimental to the health because of its carcinogenic or cancer causing properties. Trout also has the added benefit of being high in protein and omega-3, which are essential elements in any diet. Trout can be prepared in a variety of ways with absolutely pleasing results.
Required Ingredients
- Trout
- ½ cup of Flour
- ½ cup of cornmeal
- 1 tsp. of salt
- Choice seasonings

- Frying pan
- Baking tray
- Bowl(s)
- Large cooking fork
- Dish
Instructions
The preparation time for trout will vary depending on the original state of the trout that is being cooked. Freshly caught trout will have to be gutted and cleaned, while frozen trout will have to be thawed. The following will demonstrate three relatively simple ways of cooking trout.
Fired Trout
- Preheat a frying pan with sufficient oil over a medium-high flame.
- Remove the head of the trout for better presentation when cooked.
- Place the trout that have been cleaned and gutted or thawed in a container rubbing a bit of salt all over them.
- Mix a ½ cup of flour with an equal portion of cornmeal and choice spices in a separate container.
- Add the trout to the batter and cover them completely.
- Place in the hot oil and cook. Turn over each side once it achieves a golden brown colour.
- Once they are fried remove them from the frying pan and place them in a dish. Serve them with choice garnish and side dish.
Grilled Trout
Grilling trout is a healthier alternative to frying and is just as delicious.
- Preheat the grill and allow it to reach medium-high heat.
- Season the fish with choice herbs and spices and place in a container to marinate for at least 20 minutes.
- To grill the fish it is possible to simply place the fish directly on the grill and allow the fish to cook. The fish may also be wrapped in foil to preserve more moisture and flavour.
- The fish should be cooked in 8 minutes per fish if each has been filleted or in 12 minutes if grilling whole trout.
- Once the fish attains a nice golden brown colour, remove from the fire and place in a dish serving with choice garnish and side dish.
Baking Trout
Baking the trout is also a healthy way to cook trout.
- Preheat the oven to 360 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Season the trout with choice herbs and spices in a suitable container.
- Allow the trout to marinate for at least 20 minutes.
- Grease the baking tray with oil and add the trout to the container, leaving enough space between each fish.
- Place in the oven and cook for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
- Once it has been baked, remove from the baking tray and serve with choice garnish and side dish.
Tips and Warnings
- When buying fresh trout make sure it smells clean, it should not have a pungent smell.
- The flesh of the trout should be firm when touched. If the fish is pressed with the finger and an impression is left, do not buy it, the fish is not fresh.
- To store trout that will not be used immediately, place in a freezer and seal properly. It should be able to last for as long as three months.
- Do not overcook trout, it will lose some of its nutrient value and will not be as appetizing.
