How to Cook Corn on the Cob

Corn on the cob can provide one with a mouth-watering treats.  It’s easy to cook and the varied recipes are quite effortless to execute.  Just don your chef hat and apron and get ready to cook!  But first ensure you have the required ingredients and tools below. Choose your recipe and begin.

Tools Required

  • Large pot (for boiling)
  • Microwave safe dish (for microwaving)
  • Steamer (for steaming)
  • Tongs
  • Skewer or corn holders
  • Plastic wrap
  • Oven mitts

Ingredients Required

  • 2 or more corn
  • Salt
  • Butter
  • Pepper

Instructions

Boiling Corn on the Cob

  1. Take two or desired amount of corn and remove the husk by peeling back.
  2. Remove the stalk of the corn and the hairy thread residue from the husk then wash the corns.
  3. Place the corns in a pot of cold or boiled water.  Ensure there is enough water in pot to cover the corn but not enough to overflow.
  4. Cover pot and let corn boil for approximately 10 minutes or until it reaches desired texture.  Some may like the corn really tender, if so leave for an additional 10 minutes.
  5. Use tongs and remove corn from pot.
  6. Place corn on skewer for easy eating.
  7. Corn can be served with butter, salt or pepper, or a combination of all
  8. If you are a butter lover, place a stick of butter in a dish and roll the corn continuously until it is entirely covered.

Microwaving Corn on the Cob

  1. When microwaving corn its recommended to only use two per batch.
  2. Soak corn in cold water for 30 minutes and repeat steps 1 – 2 in above recipe.
  3. Add corn to microwave dish with 2 tablespoons of water.
  4. Cover dish with plastic wrap, but leave an opening for ventilation.
  5. Microwave for 4-6 minutes (or as per microwave settings)
  6. Use tongs to remove plastic wrap once corn is cooked.
  7. Corn can also be micro waved in the husk.  Just place in dish but do not apply plastic wrap. Use oven mitts to handle corn when removing husk.
  8. Repeat steps 7-8 in above recipe for flavoring.

Steaming Corn on the Cob

  1. Bring water to a boil in a pot with steamer insert.
  2. Husk and wash corn then place in steamer.
  3. Cover with a lid and steam for 15 minutes or until desired texture is obtained.  Steamed corn takes a longer cook time than boiled corn.

Tips and Warnings

  1. Overcooked corn tends to be tough so do your personal test to see if its cooked and not rely on the timelines given.
  2. Do not add salt to water as this will also toughen the corn.
  3. Sugar may be added to water for extra sweetening.
  4. When purchasing corn the outer green cover should be bright in color.
  5. The silky threads are easier to remove from cooked corn.
