How to cook Artichoke

The artichoke is a vegetable that is used primarily in North America and is mostly grown and found in California.  This vegetable is really the flower section of a thistle plant. Like many other vegetables the artichoke can be cooked using several methods, for this article two methods will be used. The first method the artichoke will be boiled n seasoned water.

Resource Tools

  • Medium Pot
  • Large knife
  • Cutting board

Resource Materials

  • Medium/large Artichoke
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Garlic
  • Lemon Juice
  • Herbs –dill and basil

Instruction

  1. Add 1 ½ cups of water to the pot and set on a medium heat.
  2. To the water in the pot add herbs, garlic, lemon juice, salt and pepper and allow to come to a boil.
  3. Set the large artichoke on the cutting board.
  4. By using your knife cut away 1inch from the top of the artichoke.
  5. By using the knife, cut away the stem of the artichoke.
  6. By using the knife remove the outer leaves of the artichoke.
  7. Use your hand to open the flowers (artichoke), pretty-much spreading the leaves out and use water to wash the vegetable clean.
  8. If there is a special flavor that you are working with then, it could be added directly to the artichoke here, example adding bits of chopped garlic in between the leaves of the artichoke.
  9. Given that your artichoke is clean and ready, add to the boiling water and cover with lid.
  10. Allow the artichoke to cook for 30 minutes.
  11. It is ready when the leaves of the artichoke pull away easily.
  12. Drain water from the artichoke and allow cooling.
  13. In fact it is said that artichoke are best when cold, so there is the option to refrigerate and have it cold, to get that unique flavor.

For the second method the microwave will be used to prepare the artichoke.

Resource Material

  • Garlic
  • Salt and pepper
  • Herbs- dill and basil
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Instruction

  1. By following steps 3-6 prepare the artichoke for cooking.
  2. Now add the ingredients to a Tupperware bowl.
  3. Place the artichoke face-down in the bowl and cover.
  4. Cook for 8minutes on high.
  5. Leave the lid on and allow cooling.

Tips

  • It is important to allow the artichoke to cook fully as then it can be truly enjoyed, but be careful as to not overcook, as like other vegetable artichokes are best with a little crisp.
  • For the best flavor from artichokes, it is best to refrigerate and enjoy cold.
  • To remove dirt from between the leaves of the artichoke, it can be left in warm salted water for 1hour.
