Leather has two major types: finished and unfinished. When you already have the items listed above, you need to examine the type of leather you want to clean.
Examples of finished leather are furniture, luggage, and certain garments. Examples of unfinished leather include work boots, saddles, and baseball gloves.
Steps to Clean Finished Leather
- Place a small amount of soap on a piece of damp cloth. Ideally, you should use a gentle moisturizing soap. Make the soap foam and bubble lightly on the cloth.
- Gently rub the cloth with soap on the leather. Ensure that the leather does not get too wet.
- Use a piece of dry cloth to wipe away the soap lather from the leather. Do not rinse the leather with water.
- Lightly polish the leather using a dry towel. Allow the leather to dry completely. This depends on the thickness of the leather.
- Apply leather conditioner when it is fully dry. Remember not to put too much leather conditioner.
Steps to Clean Unfinished Leather
- Take a sponge and rub it with saddle soap.
- Wipe the sponge with soap on the leather. Make the soap foam a little bit on the leather.
- Remove the soap foam from the leather and let it air dry.
- Apply leather preservative on the leather when it is dry. Again do not apply too much preservative on the leather.
