How to Clean Fuel Injectors
Fuel injectors should be cleaned whenever performance or emissions test is compromised. Be sure to read your vehicle’s manual and the instructions on the fuel injector cleaner before you begin.
Required Materials
- Fuel Injector cleaner
Required Tools
- Wrench
- Screwdriver
Instructions
1. Disconnect your vehicle’s fuel pump from the fuel injector. Read your vehicle’s instruction manual to learn how to do this. You must make sure the fuel injectors have no exposure to gas before you attach the fuel injector cleaner, since it is flammable.
2. Remove your vehicle’s gas cap. Fuel injector cleaner cleans debris and grime by using a burst of pressure to shoot a solvent into your fuel injectors. Opening the gas tank can help avoid explosion.
3. Once the gas cap is removed, attach the fuel injector cleaner to the fuel injectors (follow the instructions on the box) and start the engine.
4. Run the engine for as long as the cleaner directs, usually about 5 minutes.
5. Once complete, remove the fuel injector cleaner and reattach the fuel pump.
6. Close the gas cap and start the engine again. Take your vehicle on a test drive and make sure it is running smoothly and there are no abnormal noises coming from the fuel injectors.
7. If the vehicle is still not running smoothly, there may still be a blocked fuel injector. Take your vehicle to a mechanic who can clean fully blocked fuel injectors with an off-car cleaning process.
