How to Carve Eggs
Carved eggs can make a great decoration for a table or other locations. Although you can purchase carved eggs from specialty stores, it can be much more fun and rewarding to carve the eggs yourself. It takes a gentle touch, but anyone can learn how to carve an egg. Once you master the skill, you can impress your family and friends with your egg carving abilities
Required Materials
- Eggs
- Vinyl gloves
- Ventilation mask
- Cleaner
- Pencil
Required Tools
- Egg Blower
- Dremel tool
Instructions
- Put on vinyl gloves before handling the egg.
- Because egg dust can contain salmonella, it is important to also put on a ventilation mask before you begin carving.
- Through the careful use of an egg blower, remove the yolk and egg from the inside of the shell.
- Carefully but thoroughly wash the egg. Use a cleaner so that any contaminants on the egg will be killed.
- Allow the egg time to fully dry.
- Using a pencil, gently draw your intended design on the surface of the egg.
- Using a fine bit on a dremel tool, slowly carve away the design you drew on the egg.
- Place the egg in your non-dominant hand. You need to be gentle, but at the same time have a firm grip on the egg.
- Pierce the shell with the fine bit on your dremel tool and start removing the rest of the pattern.
- Going slow will reduce the chances of the egg breaking, but there’s always a chance of it breaking, so it’s best to have a couple of other empty egg shells ready to work with in case you need to start over.
Tips
- If you are concerned about the strength of the eggs you are carving, you can purchase coating substances which are applied inside of the eggs and can substantially increase the strength of the eggs you are carving.
- If you are trying to decide what kind of bit for your dremel tool to purchase, an elongated diamond tip will provide you with the best results.
