How to Build Deck Stairs

Deck stairs will certainly complete your deck and simplify transferring from one area of the said structure to another. Here are the things you need to do to build your own deck stairs.

Steps to Build Deck Stairs

  1. Plan the design and structure of your deck stairs. Examine your deck and determine where you want to put the stairs. Then create a blueprint for your stairs. Decide whether the stairs can have one or two persons at the same time. Know the number of steps and the overall height, length, and width of the stairs.
  2. Prepare the tools and materials. You normally need a tape measure, a cordless drill, a hammer, and a saw. You would also need wood for the deck itself. Ideally, you should get cedar or pressure-treated wood. The amount of lumber depends on the measurements you have made in your plan.
  3. Cut the wood according to the parts you need. Pay special attention to the steps. Use 2 x 4 lumbers for the said part of the stairs. Each step should be 4 feet wide if you are building stairs that can contain only one person. For stairs that can have two persons at one time, the steps should be 6 to 7 feet wide.
  4. Work on the stringers. The stringers are the external boards that would hold the steps in place. Always have your plan while you are cutting the lumber for the said parts.
  5. Assemble your deck stairs. Lay the stringers and place each step on them. Ensure that the steps have equal distance from each other. Seven inches is a good distance. Secure the structure using deck screws.
