You may wonder how the ancient Egyptians built their pyramids. The physics of the projects are fairly straightforward. Enacting those physics is another thing all together.
Required Materials
- plastic milk crates
- plastic sheeting
- strapping
- plywood
- sand
- concrete
- sand
- water
- rebar
- plastic ties
Required Tools
- bobcat (small front-end loader)
- level
- shovel
- wheelbarrow
Instructions
- Clearing the Site – The area around a pyramid site is just as important as the structure itself. If the area is not graded properly, the structure may end up looking like it is sitting in a hole.
- Foundation – The foundation is the most critical part of building a pyramid. If the foundation is not level, the entire project will come to nothing. Lay out the foundation according to your chosen dimensions, remembering that increased width means increased height. Dig a foundation hole at least one row deep and pour in 6” of concrete foundation. Add rebar to the foundation or it will fail under the amount of weight you are about to put on it.
- Blocks – Milk crates filled with sand make great blocks because of their consistent dimensions and ease of supply. Line each milk crate with sheet plastic and then punch small holes in the sides for drying the sand. Fill the milk crates with sand.
- Building the Pyramid – Your first row is the most important. These crates need to be absolutely lined up with one another. If a crate is slightly warped, replace it. The overall weight of each row and subsequent row should keep the pyramid stable. If you are looking for something truly monolithic, tie each crate to each of the surrounding crates. As you add rows, try to pick a dimension of overlap and stick to it.
- Face – Tie a string from the top block to the ground. This is the angle you will use for creating the face of the pyramid. Construct triangles out of strapping and tie them to the crates, two triangles per crate. Now take and measure plywood to face the pyramid. Starting at the top and working down may prove easier, not only from a reaching standpoint, but also from an adjustment perspective if the site was not exactly level when you began.
- The Tomb – If a tomb is required, move a few crates to create passageways. Make sure to move multiples of two crates so that symmetry is maintained.
