Awnings, sometimes referred to as overhangs, are secondary covering devices. They are often installed to exterior building walls as a protection against the sun, the rain and the wind. They are usually placed over doors or windows and even as a cover over a patio at the back of the house. An awning may be made out of any heavy-duty materials such as canvas and metals.
Building an awning is not as complicated as it seems. Here is a step-by-step process in building your own awning.
Required Materials
- nylon thread
- two (2) screw hooks
- two (2) key rings
- four (4) grommets
- four (4) sections of rope
- four (4) stakes
Required Tools
- sewing machine/ large needle
- measuring tape
- electric drill
Steps to Build an Awning
- Measure out the awning area. To allow hemming, purchase a plastic or canvas slightly larger than the dimensions of the awning area.
- Put a hem on the edge of the shade cloth that will be used as awning. Sew in straight running stitch by either using a sewing machine or a needle.
- Attach a grommet on all corners of the cloth.
- Bore the two pilot holes into the wall where the corners of the awning will be positioned. Place screw hooks into each hole. Drilling out these holes first prevents cracking of the wood siding and allows you to exactly insert the screw hooks.
- To create one side of the awning, insert a key ring into two of the grommets that are going against the house. Install a key ring into each of the screw hooks.
- Extend out the shade cloth to determine the location of each pole. Each pole is to be forced into the ground. Alternatively, its ends should be made flat to allow it to stand up on concrete pavement.
- Set up the poles and fasten a grommet on each pole. Attach the shade cloth using the grommets.
- Tie down the awning using the rope. Secure two sections of rope on each grommet mounted on the poles. Pull a section forward on all sides. Stake them to the ground.
- Perform the same procedure for each side by making use of the remaining 2 sections of rope.
