How to Build a Wine Rack

Whether you are a collector or a casual drinker of wine, a wine rack will make managing and storing your wine much easier. It will also store the bottles in the proper way; wine spoiled due to improper storage is a terrible waste.

Required Materials

  • wood stock
  • strapping stock 1”x2”
  • tack nails and allen bolts
  • carpentry glue
  • nails
  • screws

Required Tools

  • hammer
  • circular saw
  • drill with bits
  • tape measure
  • pencil/paper

Instructions

  1. Type – One of the very first decisions to be made when building a wine rack is where it will be used. If proper storage rules are followed, it should not go near windows or doors; it should not be in a place where humidity is likely to remain in a set range, and it should never be exposed to direct sunlight.
  2. Table Top – Table top wine racks are the most popular. This is generally because they can fit into less usable areas such as refrigerator tops or alcoves. For this type of simple wine rack, you will need some thin strapping wood stock. Sizes vary for this type, but 1” deep and 2” wide will work. Decide on the height required and cut four legs. Using the same stock, determine the width and length of the rack and cut the needed number of cross braces and subsequent bottle holders. For a six-bottle shelf, there will be 16 cross braces – 12 for the bottles and 2 at the ends for added strength and stability. Attaching the verticals and horizontals can be done in three ways: tack nailing, drilling and screwing, or with Allen screws. Attach each piece, making sure that there is a doubling of the cross bracing at the verticals for added strength.
  3. Cellar – A wine rack in a cellar needs a few other additions. It needs to be placed so that access to electrical outlets and lights does not require disturbing the bottles. It should also be built far enough off the ground that moisture can’t affect them. Humidity and temperature need to be controlled for the sake of both the wine and the wood.
  4. Building the Template – When building a larger wine rack, there is really only one process that is repeated many times. The only difference between this rack and the kitchen rack is that this one will be attached to the wall for added support and made with quality wood. Cut thick vertical posts for the rack and one horizontal 2×4” stock with jigsaw cutouts for the bottles (10” on center). Cut clamps for the vertical/horizontal bottle support connections. Do this for one section and then use it as a template for however many bottles you need.
