How to Build a Spa Deck
Spa decks are normally built in private places such as the backyards of houses. They are normally used for family get-togethers and social gatherings. Once you decide to build a spa deck, you have to keep certain things in mind, such as ensuring the deck is strong enough to bear the weight of the spa.
Required Materials
- pier blocks
- joist hanger
- nails
- edge bar
- waterproof wood sealant
- lattice paneling material
- chalk line
- deck boards
- floor joist board
- edge band support boards
Required Tools
- level
- skill saw
- chop saw
- framing nail gun
Instructions
- Calculating Height - Calculate the height and the design of the spa deck. Collect all the materials needed for construction.
- Laying Out Blocks - Lay out the pier blocks. Make that they are not placed more than 4’ apart.
- Cutting - To get the desired height, cut a post that is suitable for the size of the proposed spa deck.
- Shaping Deck Board - Every floor joist should be fixed using a nail. The deck board should have been shaped to the length needed before nailing down the floor joist.
- Tightening Screws - Tighten the floor joists using screws. You can use 2-3” screws for this purpose. Lattice paneling will provide skirting.
- Sealing - Now seal the deck. Only waterproof sealants should be used.
Tips and Warnings
- To avoid sagging of the deck, be sure to embed the pier blocks properly in the ground.
- Avoid using any materials other than pressure-treated wood.
- Check the level of the pier blocks and edge bands before installing the deck boards.
- Only use screws to attach the deck boards to the floor joists; nails may loosen themselves from the boards over time.
- Reapply the sealant at least once a year.
