If you can’t get enough of the game of golf, building a putting green at home may be a way to practice whenever the desire hits. Building a putting green takes a bit of confidence, but the thought of a summer evening working on your game should quickly take care of that.
Required Materials
- seed
- fill
- various lawn-care products
- irrigation tubing
Required Tools
- bobcat/shovel
- metal rake
- hose
- wheelbarrow
- soil removal equipment
Instructions
- Site and Layout – If you are going to do a backyard green, you’ll need to make an assessment of where it can go. High traffic areas are not a good place for putting greens.
- Digging – This is perhaps the most important step in the process. Strip away all poor soil, lumps, and rocks using a shovel. Keep in mind that when you put new clean soil back on, you will be forming obstacles for your putts.
- Laying Soil – Lay down a 1” thick bed of fresh, clean soil. Some may care to start with a bed of sand for even better drainage. Next, lay out your topsoil. In this step, make sure that even the tiniest of dirt balls is removed. Contour the green to your liking, remembering that the soil will settle over time.
- Irrigation and Grass – Running irrigation tubing from your home or installing a system from scratch can be done by a do-it-yourself practitioner The irrigation system, however, will make or break your backyard putting green, so a professional job is advised unless you are super handy. Grass responds best to consistency in care and watering, so make sure you water at the same time each day. This is especially important for putting-green grass.
- Care – Taking care of putting-green grass is not the same as taking care of the front lawn; its mowing cycle, and even the mower itself, will be different. Most importantly, its chemical treatments are different. At this stage, a good conversation with a greens keeper is advisable.
