You spent a lot of time decorating your patio or deck, and it shows. Wouldn’t it be a shame to have that lovely, comfortable furniture spoiled by rain? Enjoy the convenience of a patio cover that will offer you the flexibility of not dragging everything indoors each time it rains. Build your own patio cover, then sit on the patio and smile while it rains!
Materials:
- 1 box coated deck screws, 2” length
- 8 2”x4” lengths of treated wood, long enough to extend beyond the area you wish to cover
- 4 4”x4” lengths of treated wood, each 8 feet long
- 2 bags of concrete
- Water
- Corrugated plastic long enough and wide enough to cover the desired area
- 1 box 2” nails
Required Tools:
- Circular saw
- Tape measure
- Ladder
- Shovel
- Hammer
- Electric drill (use one that has a screwdriver attachment)
- Level
Instruction:
- Use the shovel to dig a hole at least 18” deep at all four corners of your patio.
- Measure around the outer perimeter of these holes. Cut one 2”x4” length that is the same length as that of each side.
- Place these 2”x4” lengths around the outer perimeter, and use the electric screwdriver to insert 2” screws at each juncture.
- Lay the remaining 2”x4” lengths on top of the frame created by the first one and perpendicular to the first four. Use the electric screwdriver to insert 2” screws at each juncture.
- Stand the 4”x4” length upright in the first hole. Using struts or friends to balance it, pour concrete and water into the hole and mix well. Use a level to make certain that the length of wood is straight. Support it with wood struts until the concrete has set. Do the same for each of the three remaining holes.
- After the concrete has set completely, cover the concrete with dirt.
- Place the frame created by the 2”x4”s on top of the 4”x4” poles. Use the electric screwdriver to insert two 2” screws at each of the four corners.
- Place the corrugated plastic on top of the frame.
- Nail the plastic to the frame of the roof.
- Sit back and enjoy the next thunderstorm – outside, under your new roof!
Tips:
- Use caution when using power machinery.
- Wear eye protection when using power machinery to avoid injury.
- Measure carefully
- Be sure the concrete has set fully before attaching the roof frame. Otherwise, your patio’s roof will slant.
