How to Build a Model Sailboat

There is no joy like assembling a model sailboat. Some may say that this project has died at the hands of the computer, but it can still be found in any hobby store, and perhaps even at a lumber yard.

Required Materials

  • aircraft plywood
  • epoxy glue
  • graph paper
  • pins

Required Tools

  • modeling knife
  • scissors
  • tape measure
  • clamps
  • pencil/paper

Instructions

  1. American Model Yacht Association (AMYA) – If you want to take model ship building to the next level, you will need to become aware of the AMYA rules and regulations. They are fairly stringent, so be sure to check that your model is eligible if it makes it to any AMYA events. To this end, each and every type of model sailboat needs to meet different requirements. Materials, dimensions, and coating will vary depending upon what you choose.
  2. Basic Hull – As you choose the materials for your hull, take a look at the many designs available for each boat type. If you are using aircraft plywood, you will need several pieces that can be steamed to meet the basic shape and dimensions required. Depending upon your choice, a cover of fiberglass or impregnated cloth resin may help you to get a more ’finished’ look. A solid plan will go a long way to helping you cut and lay out your design. Full, pre-made plans are also available.
  3. Decking – The AMYA has rules for keeping the decking of the boat in place. There are various deck layouts which can be chosen. A good eye and a steady hand will help in manufacturing cockpit features and other accessories.
  4. To-Do List – As with any project, there is generally a long ’to-do’ list. Where possible, consider ordering ready-built elements; sails and the mast are two such elements that take a lot of time to produce and can be purchased rather then made. Another element that might be considered for purchase is the radio controller.
  5. Jigs – As you get into the project, you will find that building jigs is a good way to avoid needing a third hand. The jigs will keep the project steady as you go about finishing each element. One of the more convenient jigs is one that keeps the hull from tipping as you work on it.
  6. Patience – This particular type of build project is one of the more taxing to undertake. Small parts and exacting specifications make patience and a calm personality very important. Expect to spend many quiet hours completing your model sailboat.
