How to build a loft

A loft is a structure erected well above the ground level of a room. Many lofts are small accommodating only a bed while others are large enough to act as a fairly larger storage space. Attics are the most traditionally built lofts and are a great way to store unused items. The type of loft that will be illustrated here may be used for storage but is not quite as enclosed as an attic. It requires a large enough vertical space for its successful construction. Therefore, it is best built in homes or rooms with high ceilings.  Once this addition is built the room will acquire additional space. Constructing the loft is a fun project to undertake and very rewarding once completed.

Required Tools

  • Saw
  • Power Drill/Screw Driver
  • Hammer
  • Tape Measure

Required Materials

  • 2×4s and 4×4s
  • Screws
  • Joint Braces
  • 3/4″ plywood

Instructions

  1. Ascertain the desired dimensions of the loft and locate an area for building the loft. Measure this area and create a working diagram to better visualize the layout of the loft in comparison to the room.
  2. Acquire the materials at any local hardware and prepare the area for construction. Remove all furniture or items that may be damaged away from the work area.
  3. Construct the frame by first sawing the desired pieces. Build the frame before installation. The areas to the outer most portion of the frame should consist of two 2×4’s. The crossmembers can be built with a single 2×4. Use joint braces to combine the longest sections.
  4. Elevate the frame and place 4×4s beneath it to reinforce the structure. Having additional aid from other persons when pursuing this part of the process may be necessary.
  5. When the frame has been fixed in the area with all the 4×4s, insert the plywood on top to create the flooring for the loft. Use screws to fix the plywood to the frame, only a few screws are necessary.
  6. If the loft is placed in the corner of the room then this will give it added support on two sides. To reinforce the sides that are not in the corners extend braces from the 4×4s to the ground area.
  7. If the loft is fairly high a wooden ladder can be constructed from the 2×4s and attached securely to the structure with screws.
  8. Additionally a railing can be made with additional lumber if desired.
  9. Once all the construction has been completed test it to be certain it does not waver. If it is still unstable, add more wood and screws to reinforce the structure.

Tips and Warnings

  • The loft can be dressed up in any manner with paint or carpeting.
  • Recess lighting can be placed beneath the loft as another source of lighting in any room. This can be accomplished by creating a mock ceiling below the loft with ply board and running electrical wires and lighting beneath that area.
  • Be sure to inspect the loft fairly often to ensure that the structure is not deteriorating or becoming gradually unstable.
  • If the loft will be used for storage, ensure that it is not too heavily weighed down with excessive items.
