How to Build a Grape Trellis

A grape trellis is a structure designed to provide support for grape vines. A strong and sturdy vineyard trellis is a crucial part in any vineyard system. You cannot expect to harvest good quality grapes without a reliable trellis as the vines are not strong enough to support themselves and the fruits they will bear.

Fortunately, building a functional trellis is pretty much a straightforward process. Here are a few pointers to remember when building a grape trellis.

Required Materials

  • springs
  • ratchets
  • anchors
  • cross arms
  • wire fasteners
  • wire splicer
  • fence pliers
  • spinning jenny
  • posthole digger
  • tamper
  • shovel
  • saw

Steps to Build a Grape Trellis

  1. Plant your grapevines in 8-feet by 8-feet plots. Make sure that each grapevine is set 8 to 10 feet apart.
  2. Provide at least 8 feet of trellis for each grapevine that you grow. Make sure that the trellis is strong enough to support the vines and a full crop of grapes. The trellis should also ensure that sunlight reaches the entire grapevine, including the stems, leaves, buds, and fruit.
  3. The height of your trellises depends on the climate and the type of grape planted. Taller trellises are usually used in warmer climate while shorter trellises are used in areas visited by frost.
  4. Build the trellises before the grapevines are planted. Use sturdy, long-lasting materials such as pre-treated wood, PVC pipe, aluminum, or stainless steel.
  5. Drive the posts into the ground at depths of approximately 2 feet. Set intervals between posts at approximately 20 feet. Use 3-foot posts for short trellises and 8-foot posts for tall trellises.
  6. String two lengths of 12.5 gauge galvanized steel wire along the stretch of posts. Set the bottom wire about 3 inches off the ground while the second wire runs along the top of the posts. Secure them in place with a staple gun. Then set wire strainers at both ends of the wire to increase and keep the tension on the main wires.
  7. To install catch wires, pound in large nails on both sides of the posts that stretch along both rows of trellis wires. Cut a number of lengths of lighter gauge wire the same length as the entire trellis. Add chain links to both ends of this wire and hook them to either end of the trellis. Let them rest on the middle post.
  8. Run a branch from the main stem of the grapevine along the main wires. Use the catch wires to hold the vines in place. Adjust the catch wires as the grapevines grow upward.
