You don’t need to be a car mechanic to build a go cart frame. You don’t even need any advanced or special equipment. Just get the following and you can proceed.
Required Tools and Materials
Tape measure
Chalk
Tube notcher
Pipe bender
Welding tool
Hammer
Chop saw
Filter material
Angle iron
Create the Measurements
Make sure that your workspace is clear. Now sit down and imagine you’re driving in the cart. Determine your comfort level and how much space you need. Use the chalk to outline this space. If you’re going to make a passenger seat, keep this ratio in mind. The frame width is 2/3 that of the scale at the wheel.
This ratio is important. If the wheel frame isn’t wider the cart will not be stable. By following that principle you’ll build a go cart frame that is manageable.
Cutting the Metal Parts
Use the chop saw to slice the metal. Refer to your sketch design for the proper shape. Be certain that the cuts are according to the measurements you made. When finished, set it before you. Check if the proportions are correct.
Get your welding tool and connect the tubes. Use the tubing notcher for the area near your legs. Again you need to ensure the welding is appropriate. Assess your feet rest to determine the wedge accuracy. When you get to the rounded end, use a hammer to flatten it.
Adding the Roll Bars
To build a go cart frame that’s safe, add the roll bar. Install this around the driver. You can add the seats now. It needs to be a couple of inches off the surface. This will create the gravitational center required. This is crucial for balancing.
Create the Frame with Angle Iron
For this method start by making the chalk outline. Now take the angle iron. If it’s not yet bent to shape, heat it. When it cools sufficiently bend to the appropriate shape. Get the welding tool when the right shape is attained. Repeat the process for the entire frame. Add some filler if necessary. You can also use the pipe bender for designing the frame.
Tips and Warnings
There are various types of saws you can use when you build a go cart frame. While the chop saw is the best you can use a hacksaw instead. Always wear gloves when using it. Having eye protection is also important.
Welding can be a difficult task. Even if you know how to do this, be careful. If not done correctly it can be dangerous. The same precaution should be taken when heating iron.
There are many frame designs around. These have been modified and altered to provide the best possible speeds for the vehicle. You probably won’t have to worry about this right now. But having an idea of the other styles may prove useful later on.
When you build a go cart frame you’ll take the first steps to getting into racing. With enough practice, you’ll be going round the circuits like a pro.
